Deer
Sitka Blacktail Deer are a small but handsome deer. Much like their southern cousin the Coues Deer, they are highly sought after despite their petite size. They are the only member of the deer family officially recognized in Alaska, and the only deer with a double throat patch. The meat is excellent, and they are often utilized as a meat animal by residents and nonresidents alike.
The areas we hunt for deer hold just as many and as big of trophies as anywhere on the island. However, we are not geared towards speaking in inches, and like our other hunts focus on a quality experience as opposed to antler sizes. Deer hunting is a lot of fun, as there are many animals around and you can hunt as hard or as easy as you like and still have a successful trip.
Deer season runs from August 1 – December 31. We generally take clients for deer mid-November though early December, though we will accommodate any time during the season that there are not conflicts with other hunts. Tags are over-the-counter.
Deer hunts are generally booked as a 5-day hunt but can be lengthened or shortened at your request. Camps may be tent or cabin depending upon time of year.

Weather
Weather during the hunting season can vary greatly. Hunters should be prepared for a wide range of weather conditions from gale force winds, rain or snow to 70F and sunshine. Average temps vary from 30F-50F. Pack accordingly. Quality gear goes a long way toward your comfort and ability to succeed.

Trophy Care, Export and Departure
Trophies will be transported from the field in the raw. Our guides are trained in trophy preservation. Arrangements will be made to ship trophies to a local taxidermist who can personally process and mount your trophy, or can expedite it to a taxidermist of your choice.

Licenses and Tags
Hunters should purchase their hunting licenses and required tags online in advance of their arrival. They can be purchased from the Alaska Department of Fish and Game at http://www.adfg.alaska.gov/index.cfm?adfg=huntlicense.main
Please coordinate with us to be sure proper hunting licenses and tags are secured before your trip.
